Description:

Very fine, almost certainly unique presentation volume in Italian and German, "Munchen Die Hauptstadt der Bewegung Grusst Benito Mussolini" ("Munich, The Capital of the Movement, Greets Benito Mussolini"), (Munich: Max Schmidt & Sohne), 1937, 168pp. 8vo, in soft red leather boards with a large gilt national eagle and swastika at the center of the front cover, bound with a leather lace and housed in a matching slipcase of red cloth boards. The volume commemorates Italian dictator BENITO MUSSOLINI'S (1883-1945) state visit to Germany in September of 1937, and the front flyleaf bears a tipped-in card personally presenting it to Mussolini, courtesy of Munich Gauleiter and Bavarian Minister of Interior ADOLF WAGNER (1890-1933), and the front pastedown further bears Mussolini's ex libris bookplate. The text pages within the book are parchment, and contain the itinerary of Mussolini's visit, brief descriptions of the locales he toured, and an extensive history of Munich. The remaining pages are given over to b/w photographs of Munich and its Bavarian surroundings, including the"Feldherrnhalle", Hitler's retreat at the Berghof, sections of the Autobahn, and more. The final pages feature tipped-in glossy color cards reproducing sketches used in planning the venues and decorations erected in Mussolini's honor. Shows the stamp of a former owner in Munich on the front pastedown and also very faintly on the slipcase, with small circular stains to the right edge of the front flyleaf and title page, with slight rubbing to the extreme edges of the covers, and minor wear to the slipcase, else very good to fine.
