Description:

DECORATED SLAVE LEG SHACKLE WITH RATTLES
Excessively rare 'crab rattle' slave leg shackle, one of many different devices used to track a slave's movements using sound. This example bears engraved designs resembling African artwork on three sides, an attribute we have never encountered. The 8 in. x 4.75 in., the device, constructed of copper, has two oblong 'pockets' on either side that are filled with small metal balls that rattle when the shackle is moved. Each side of the shackle bears an engraved zig-zag motif, with the top of the shackle, where the rings are located, has a more intricate design incorporating an 'X', circles, and horizontal lines. All of the engravings exhibit honest, period wear. This shackle would have been wrapped around a slave's ankle and then attached to either a post via a chain or closed with a lock. The length of time a person was shackled was indefinite, or in the case of children, might have been applied for months or years at a time. In addition to constant noise with each movement, the person wearing the shackle could also suffer rash, blisters, broken skin, burns, and bruises. This example bears four attachment rings on either side as well. Originates from a Maryland estate.
