STEPHEN DECATUR (1779 - 1820) American naval officer whose warship United States defeated the British Macedonian in the War of 1812, later he led a squadron to Algeria to force a peace on American terms. Decatur is also well remembered for his toast: "...our country right or wrong!". His scarce signature "Navy Comm[ande]rs Off[ice] Stephen Decatur" on a 2 1/2" x 3/4" slip mounted to a 3" x 5" card. Very good. $300 - 400
