Description:

DEAN CORNWELL
(1892-1960) American illustrator and artist whose works were featured in famous literature, advertisements, and posters for the war effort. Good association T.L.S. on personal letterhead, 1p. 4to., New York, December 24, 1936, written to and co-signed at the conclusion by OTTO SOGLOW (1900-1975) American cartoonist best known for his comic strip 'The Little King.' In part: '...As part of the decorative scheme for the Sir Walter Raleigh Room, a new restaurant-bar I am now working on for the Warwick Hotel, there is an heraldic frieze incorporating about sixty coats of arms. Sir Walter Raleigh was a man who had visions and the courage to realize his dreams. I feel that those who have reached the height in their profession have, like Raleigh, gone beyond ordinary horizons...Therefore instead of using old shields that have no bearing on life in New York today, I conceived the idea of creating new ones...With the splendid corporation given me this should be an unusually beautiful room, and will open in January...' Soglow adds after signing 'Okay Dean, be sure to spell my name correctly.' Fine condition. The Warwick Hotel was opened in 1926 by famous businessman William Randolph Hearst to cater to the New York elite. Cornwell was paid a large commission to paint murals of various scenes from life of Sir Walter Raleigh in the salon.
