Description:

DE LUZE FAMILY CARTE DE VISITE ALBUM AND PASSPORT
A beautifully bound carte de visite album, approx. 60pp. oblong 8vo., containing portraits of the prominent French De Luze family, who were and still are involved in the wine and cognac industry, with one of the images of the album even showing a man gazing upon a cup of red wine. Most images show the family members in formal attire, even showing some of the boys who were unbreeched and still wearing gowns, while others show members in military uniform. It is ornately bound in an ornate leather binding with fleur-de-lis made of bronze. The paper is bordered in gilt trim. The cover has sustained minor damage, otherwise near fine. In 1817, Alfred De Luze and his brother Louise-Philippe established a wine and cognac import export company in New York. In 1822 the company De Luze was founded by Alfred A. & Son of Luze in Bordeaux. In 1862, Alfred Luze purchased the Domaine du Chaigne in the growing cru of Grande Champagne in order to begin production of cognacs. SOLD WITH a U.S. passport issued to Francis Ogden de Luze on May 3, 1860 and signed by Secretary of State LEWIS CASS. It bears visa stamps from Paris, Bordeaux, Geneav, Berlin, Dresden, and Mexico. Housed in a gilt-trimmed wallet.
