Description:

DAYTON-WRIGHT RB-1 RACER AND HALL SCOTT ARCHIVE
A wonderful group of material concerning aircraft engine manufacturers Hall Scott, the Dayton-Wright RB-1 Racer, and Hall Scott engines, all from the files of the Hall Scott Motor Car Co. based in Berkeley, California. It was among the most significant builders of water-cooled aircraft engines before World War I. The Dayton-Wright Racer was a high wing single-engine monoplane racing aircraft developed in the United States to participate in the 1920 Gordon Bennett Cup air race. The revolutionary aircraft was shipped to France and flown by Howard Rinehart in the 28 September 1920 race, but was forced to withdraw after a cable failure prevented retraction of the gear/flap mechanism. After the race it was returned to the United States, and is now preserved at the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, Michigan. Many of the aircraft's advanced features were incorporated into a prototype fighter, the XPS-1. This 36 piece grouping includes: a 1917 T.L.S. from the Advisory Committee of the Council of national defense, 2pp. 4to., Washington, to owner E. J. Hall, discussing an exhibition of parts of Hall Scott's new L-6a engine and issues with ignition; a detailed 9pp. 4to. summary of the contributions made by Hall and his staff to the war effort; a 32pp. 8vo. bound brochure, Berkeley, 1912, fully illustrated with costs and specifications on the company's 'Aviation Power Plants'; six original 8 x 10 in. photographs of various views of the Dayton-Wright RB-1 racer; a 4.25 x 3.5 in. photo of the 1909 Hall Scott A1 engine; five photographs of pioneering Japanese pilots ca. 1922 flying Nakajima biplanes powered by Hall Scott engines (one photo shows some loss at a corner); 20 photo negatives, 5 x 7 in. and 3.5 x 5.5 in. showing Hall Scott power plants, various aircraft fitted with them, the Rb-1 Racer, pilots, etc.; and a 6pp. 8vo. printed specification of the 'Liberty Engine', which saw wide use in aero applications, and, once marinized, in marine use both in racing and runabout boats. All in very good to fine condition.
