Description:

103. VARINA H. DAVIS (1826 - 1906) Wife of Jefferson Davis, President of the Confederate States of America. Mrs. Davis remained a staunch supporter of "the lost cause" until her death. Excellent content A.L.S. "Devotedly yours, V.D.", 3pp., 8vo, Beauvoir, Mississippi, Feb. 9, 1883, to Jefferson Davis whom she addresses "Dear Husband", in part: "...Nothing strange has happened since you left but that a letter of Mr. (?) asking for plows has been sent here. I have sent it into Mr. Payne and perhaps he can tell how much to grant of his requests, he also mentions hoes as required...David has exhorted himself hoarse & sick & in bed - so the place lingers...Some of the Anchorage people have put in an appearance...Maggie and the little ones quite well, and our baby Winnie says she will come home on Tuesday next rain or shine. The dear letter you sent from New Orleans, also the money arrived safely and I just missed you a little more after reading it...before its reception I felt lonely enough...A few days ago a party of decent looking Yankees came, two ladies & three gentlemen, to pay you a visit - one was a newspaperman & a Doctor as well - he desired to know your age etc. I told him I did not inquire about your age and though mine was sufficiently attested by my appearance - how long I had been married? I said forty years, in fact all my life - after two or three more questions I told him very frankly I received you believing you to be a gentlemen and ladies who desired to pay a visit and such are glad to be presented to you, but I hope you will not make such a visit the subject of newspaper notoriety - he declared he would not, but I think the rest of the Yankees may slide in a picture...God keep you safe dear old husband, sometimes I feel as if this is the one thing necessary to my life...". Fine. $600 - 800
