97. JEFFERSON DAVIS (1808 - 1889) President of the Confederacy who led his armies beyond the surrender at Appomattox. Fine A.D.S. "Jefferson Davis", 1p, folio, Beauvoir, Mississippi, Nov. 12, 1880, an agreement entirely in Davis' hand between himself and George K. Vierling to construct twelve "quarter houses" at Davis' plantation Brierfield. In small part: "Memo of agreement between Geo. K. Vierling and Jefferson Davis for the building of twelve quarter houses at Brierfield, Warren County, Misspi. according to the plan and specifications furnished by the said Davis to the said Vierling, viz. the houses are to be of the best material and thirty by sixteen feet. To have a portico in front six by sixteen feet...The said Davis is to provide the blocks for the...foundation...Further, the said Davis agreed to advance...as much money as may be necessary for the purchase of shingles and hardware in New Orleans...". Brierfield plantation was restored to Davis by the Mississippi Court of Appeals in 1878 after being sold by his older brother to his colored manager in a convoluted sale while Jeff Davis was a prisoner at Fortress Monroe. Davis provides a second additional full signature in the text as well as three examples of his last name. Also signed by Vierling with a docket in his hand on the verso confirming receipt of $185. The number and size of the structures clearly indicate these were to be for field workers. Attractively written in dark purple ink. Ideal for display. Fine. $2,000 - 3,000
