Lot 707
707. JEFFERSON DAVIS (1808-1889) President of the Confederacy who led his armies beyond the surrender at Appomattox. Fine association A.L.S. 2pp. 8vo., Memphis, Mar. 4, 1872, to General Braxton Bragg comparing notes about P. T. Beauregard. In part: "...Accept my thanks for your prompt compliance with my request for information in regard to Beauregard's misrepresentation. My impression has been that the order to you caused his application for Surgeon's certificate because my recollection is that he told you that he was an Engineer...was not sufficiently acquainted with matters of organization...to perform those duties required...". Beauregard evacuated Corinth, MS, in May 1863, taking sick leave after without obtaining permission or even telling President Davis. Davis, in turn, replaced Beauregard with Braxton Bragg. Split at middle fold, easily repaired, otherwise very good. Sold with a portrait engraving. $800-1,200
