203. (JEFFERSON DAVIS & FAMILY) Sepia photograph, 4" x 51/2", of Jefferson and Varina Davis in formal dress with Jefferson standing in a Napoleonic pose, Varina seated beside him reading from a book. The photographer is identified as "W. Notman, Montreal / Photographer to the Queen". With a companion photograph of the Davis' children taken in 1867, 4" x 5 1/2", formally posed and identified on the verso in a contemporaneous hand: "Jefferson Davis Children" with their names Maggie, Jeff, Billie and Winnie also noted. The Davis' other two children, Joseph and Samuel both died tragically before this photograph was taken. A scarce pair of images. Very good. $300 - 500
