Description:

(1814-1868) American congressman and senator from Pennsylvania, most famous as being the prime sponsor of the 'Wilmot Proviso' which was a failed 1846 proposal to ban the expansion of slavery to lands gained from the Mexican War. Excellent association A.L.S. 'D. Wilmot', 1p. 4to., Washington, March 31, 1861, to Lyle White regarding a political appointment. In part: '...I saw Mr. Chase yesterday, and tried to obtain a promise that he would put at my disposal some two or three clerkships in his department, intending to make you one of them. I could not get any satisfactory assurances...The great difficulty is I am trying to serve too many...I fully believe that Seward [Secretary of State WILLIAM SEWARD, Lincoln's Secretary of State] is disposed to refuse everything I ask, because I opposed his nomination in [18]56 & [18]60...Your best chance I am satisfied is to make an appeal personally to him...' Slight toning, else fine condition. 'Mr. Chase' is no doubt Salmon P. Chase (1808-1873), newly appointed Secretary of the Treasury under President Lincoln.
