Description:

DAVID KALAKAUA
(1836-1891) King of Hawaii (1874-91), his ideas of reform aroused political opposition culminating in revolution and his powers restricted by a new constitution. Rare partly-printed D.S. as King, 1p. sm. folio parchment, Honolulu, Mar. 5, 1875, an appointment of William M. Wherry as "Knight Companion of Our Royal Order of Kamehameha I", boldly signed by Kalakaua at bottom. Two horizontal folds, else very good. With letter of transmittal signed by JOHN O. DOMINIS (1832 - 1891), Prince Consort of the Kingdom of Hawaii upon his marriage to the last reigning monarch, Queen Liliuokalani. William M. Wherry (1836-1918) was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions at the Battle of Wilson's Creek on Aug. 10, 1861, where he "displayed conspicuous coolness and heroism in rallying troops that were recoiling under heavy fire" while serving as a First Lieutenant of Co. D, 3rd Reserve Missouri Infantry. He may have been recognized by Kalakaua through his close association with Gen. John Schofield who recommended that Pearl Harbor be made an American base.
