Description:

DAVID G. "TOMMY" LEWIS
(b. 1898) Rhodesian Second Lieut. who flew with the British Army. On Apr.20, 1918 Lewis became the last "kill" of Baron Manfred von Richthofen as the pair dueled over German lines. Lewis was captured moments after von Richthofen flew past him, waving. Fine content T.L.S. "Tommy", 1p. 4to., Salisbury, June 22, 1974 to an American friend describing his final encounter with the "Red Baron". In part: "...On my left about 200 yards away were the German support trenches and I crashed on the other side...happened to be a contingent of infantry on their way to the front line...German officer who informed his men I had just been shot down by Richthofen who was circling above...very close to le Hamel...Two sets of 6 set off and 4 miles over the lines we met Richthofen and his lot...". Lewis explains that von Richthofen's report was generally accurate, except that his plane had not gone down in flames, although his flight suit had been scorched. He also corrects a few details in a painting which had been done of the battle. Near fine.
