DAVID G. MCINTOSH
(1836-1916) Confederate colonel, commander of the South Carolina Pee Dee Light Artillery under Stonewall Jackson at Harpers Ferry, Antietam and Fredericksburg, later commanded an artillery battalion at Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Bristoe Station, Mine Run, the Wilderness and the Siege of Petersburg. Present at Appomattox, where he slipped through Union lines to join Johnston's forces in North Carolina. After their surrender, he aided Jefferson Davis in his flight from Richmond and attempted to join Confederate holdouts in the Trans-Mississippi Department before Davis' capture brought a final end to the war. Rare A.L.S., 3pp. 8vo., Towson, MD, Aug. 9, 1889 to a ‘Young'. He responds to his correspondent's request for information regarding an ongoing legal case, and adds a personal note, in part: ‘...I am pretty well for an old man, but not nearly as grey or as old as Middleton…' He signs ‘D. G. McIntosh' at the conclusion on the second page in black ink. Shows folds, evenly toned overall, otherwise in very good condition.
