Description:

DAVID BUSHNELL
(1742-1824) American inventor of the first submarine to be used in combat, dubbed the ‘Turtle', which was designed to attack ships by attaching a time bomb to their hulls, while using a hand powered drill and ship auger bit to penetrate the hulls. It failed, however, in a 1776 attack on a British ship, prompting Bushnell to turn his attention to the development of torpedoes. These were launched in what has become known as the ‘Battle of the Kegs'. Partial A.D.S. ‘D. Bushnell Capt. & Senior Officer in the Corps of the Support Miners [?]', 1p. 8vo., [n.p. but Connecticut], [n.d.]. The bottom portion of a larger document, reading in full: ‘I certify the above named Nathanial Osborn Serge belongs to my Company is now in actual service, and is accounted in the [?] of the State of Connecticut.' Irregularly trimmed at top, lightly toned folds, otherwise very good.
