DAVID BELL BIRNEY
(1825 - 1864) Union major general who replaced Phil Kearny, he fought at Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg. In October, 1864 Birney succumbed to malaria, dying at his home. Scarce war-date A.L.S. "Birney", 1p. 8vo., "Camp Nr Catletts [Station, Virginia], Nov. 4", [n.y.], to Mrs. Graham, in part: "...I have written to you and the General at New York. Do not fail to come down with him. There can be no possible objection and you do not need a pass...". Light ink smudging, slightly trimmed, mounting strip on verso, otherwise in very good condition.
