Description:

Pair of rare war-date endorsements by two Union brigadier generals on a single document. The signed item is a 1p. legal folio letter from Col. (and later Bvt. Brig. Gen., P.O.W., no date) J. FREDERICK PIERSON of the 1st N.Y. Vols to Major Gen. Joseph Hooker, sent from "Camp Pitcher, Va.", Dec. 18, 1862. Pierson sends the resignation of First Lt. James C. Shawe who has been charged and is to be brought before a court martial. Pierson asks that the case be considered as soon as possible. On the verso, there appears first a signed endorsement by Gen. HIRAM G. BERRY (1824-1863), who served at 1st Bull Run, Fair Oaks and the Seven Days and was killed while leading a bayonet charge at Chancellorsville. From "Hd. Qrs. Camp Pitcher" on Dec. 20, 1862 Berry forwards the letter and signs with rank. There follows an A.E.S. of Gen. DAVID BELL BIRNEY (1825-1864), who replaced Phil Kearny and fought at Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg. In October, 1864 Birney succumbed to malaria, dying at his home. On the same day, Birney instructs that the letter be returned to Berry: "...who will direct Col. Pierson to forward new charges made out in proper [?] to these Hd. Qrs...". A few minor repairs to folds far from these endorsements, else very good.
