Description:

DAVE BREGER - THE CREATOR OF "G. I. JOE"
DAVE BREGER (1908-1970) American cartoonist who created the comic strip G. I. Joe, resulting in widespread usage of that term during World War II and later. Approx 87 pcs. of first generation duplicates of original "G. I. Joe" cartoons by Breger, printed on heavy stock and likely used for wire transmission purposes, ca. 1940-45, most 7" x 8". The title of the cartoon is named after the bespectacled buffoonish main character, "G.I. Joe", from the military reference "Government Issue", and it was first published June 17, 1942 in the soldier's newspaper, Yank. Overall very good to fine. Breger soon became one of the most famous and widely read of the WWII cartoonists, and the term "G.I. Joe" was adopted first by soldiers and then on the home front as the popular term for the American foot soldier. From the estate of Col. Ernest "Tex" Lee, who served throughout the war as Eisenhower's Executive Officer and Aide de Camp. Lee joined Ike in June, 1941 and assisted in the planning of the invasions at Normandy and Sicily and the ultimate defeat of Germany.
