Description:

DANIEL WEBSTER
(1782 - 1852) American lawyer and statesman who verbally jousted with Calhoun in the Senate and later supported Clay''s compromise measures on slavery. Interesting A.L.S., 1p. 8vo., Washington, May 17, 1850 to "Benedict & Boardman". In part: "...Mr. Carroll now says that our cause will come up for argument just about Wednesday morning. There can be no delay, nor postponement, which will not put off the cause til nest session...". Matted with an engraving, framed. On the previous March 7th, Webster rose to address the Senate in a speech supporting the 1850 Compromise - a speech which caused an uproar among northern abolitionists. In this letter, it appears that Senator Webster is still marshalling support for the Compromise in the wake of his devastating address. He would resign his seat on July 22, 1850.
