Description:

DANIEL TYLER
(1799 - 1882) Union brigadier general, one of the first to be so appointed. Fought in the First Battle of Bull Run and assigned part of the blame for the Union disaster. Tyler also commanded Camp Douglas, a parolee camp which he ran poorly. Tyler later commanded at Baltimore, at Harper's Ferry between June 13, 1863 and July 3, 1864, and finally at the District of Delaware. Great content war-date A.L.S., 4pp. 4to., Wilmington, De., Oct. 12, 1863 to Col. Donn Piatt of the 13th Ohio and a noted journalist. Colorful opinions, commencing with some on Col. Wm. L. Schley's 5th Maryland. In part: '...I think Gen. E.B. Tyler sent me Schley's regiment 'to torment me before my time' for a more worthless, villainous, mutinous set of scamps I never saw...I am after them with a sharp stick...If Schley himself won't die or resign, he ought to be cashiered.'. Tyler, nearing his 65th birthday, then asks 'Have you seen that unreasonable [Secretary of War] Stanton? I have cause of quarrel with him, but I am too old & peaceable to quarrel with anybody, out of the rebel service. I will neither quarrel nor grumble, provided Stanton will accept my resignation...Can't you...be put into my vacancy... I am an old fogy & Stanton seems to have found me out is my misfortune...'. Very good condition.
