Description:

DANIEL SICKLES
(1825-1914) Union major general who commanded a brigade at Chancellorsville and Gettysburg, where his rash advance in the Peach Orchard nearly caused a Union riot. Good content war-date L.S. ‘D. Sickles Brig. Gen. Comm'g', 4pp. 4to., ‘Head Quarters, Sickles Division', Fairfax, Oct. 31, 1862, to N.Y. Adjutant and Brig. Gen. Thomas Hillhouse advising that delays in forwarding rosters for his Excelsior Brigade were due to the illnesses of several staff officers. Sickles also attends to routine business, mentioning his happiness hearing of the acceptance of a subordinate's promotion, and complaining bitterly of a general order allowing men to be detached from his ranks, stating: ‘...I hope you will not forget the Excelsior Brigade in the distribution of your drafted men...the sooner they are sent...the better...'. The Excelsior Brigade had the fifth most losses of the war. Light toning and minimal tears along the folds, glue and paper remnants on the right margin of the last page affecting some of the text but could be soaked off. Generally, very good. WITH: two unsigned retained copies of letters from Sickles, again complaining about the unapproved reduction of his ranks and other administrative items. A fine lot.
