Lot 345
Daniel Ruggles 1810-1897 Confederate brigadier general who led a corps at Shiloh, later serving under Bragg, Van Dom, and Joseph E. Johnston. A.L.S. signed twice, Ruggles at top and D.R. at conclusion, 4pp. 4to., Mexico City, Dec. 5, 1847 to his wife. A warm letter thanking his wife for her letters, asking for news of his sons, and complaining of his lack of recognition. In part: ...I [have done] a lion's share of hard fighting - but between unprincipled scoundrels and selfish villains I have been scandalously neglected. I am heartily tired of this miserable mode of life away from you and my dear little boys... my affairs are suffering for my attention. Much more military and personal content. Very good.
