Description:

DANIEL H. RUCKER
(1812 - 1910) Career officer of the U.S. Army eventually earning the title of brigadier general, served as a quartermaster during the Civil War. Fine association signed endorsement on the verso of a secretarially signed letter sent to him by Rep. JAMES A. GARFIELD, an ex-Union general himself, 2pp. 4to., Washington, Feb. 26, 1868 asking that Rucker furnish the Committee on Military Affairs information on any part of the Fort Snelling Military Reservation which officers may choose to retain, records on the sale of the reservation, and records on the use of the reservation since its sale. Rucker signs an endorsement on the verso of the last page forwarding the request to the Quartermaster General and claiming he has no papers that would suit the committee's needs. Also endorsed by Gen. EDWARD D. TOWNSEND. Rucker's signature a bit smeared, else very good. Fort Snelling is at the confluence of the Mississippi and Missouri rivers in Minnesota. In 1858, when Minnesota became a state, the army sold it to Franklin Steele for $90,000. Steele operated the two ferries serving the fort across both rivers at the same time he was the sutler to the fort. He also was a friend of the sitting President, James Buchanan. Steele at some point failed to make payments, and ownership reverted to the federal government.
