Daniel Gookin 1612-1687 English colonist who settled in Virginia in 1641, major general of militia and superintendent of Indians in Massachusetts from 1656-87 Gookin worked closely with John Eliot to protect the rights of Indians, and suffered much criticism. Signed book, his copy of Barriffe's Military Discipline, an early edition published about 1650 The book features various sword-handling drills, mounted maneuvers, and so on. Leather bound, a few pages missing with cover chipped, signed on the inside front cover.
