Description:

DANIEL B. LUCAS
(1836 - 1909) Poet, author and officer in the Confederate Army who served under Henry A. Wise during the Kanawha campaign of 1861. Late in the war he ran the Union blockade to aid his college friend John Yates Beall, who had been arrested as a spy. Unable to assist Beall in his defense, Lucas resided in Canada. Upon hearing of the surrender at Appomattox, he composed his most famous poem: "The Land Where We Were Dreaming" earning him the epithet, "The Poet Laureate of the Lost Cause." Scarce and good content war date A.L.S. 2pp. 4to., Richmond, July 30, 1864, writing, in part: "...I started for the Valley, but did not succeed in getting farther than Front Royal where I staied [sic] with your sister Mrs. Wheatley, where I had hoped to see you, but you were most probably at New Market. I remained, but one day in F.R. and proceeded thence to Luray, intending to go on to New Market and find you and Fred, but changed my mind at Lurary, and returned to Gordonsville... Tell Fred I went to Culpeper and saw his farm; the Yankees have destroyed all the fencing and all outbuildings except the kitchen, and smokehouse; the house in uninjured, and the timber has suffered very little. The land is all set in splendid timothy, is pretty clean, and well watered -- was worth $40.00 per acre before the war. I had the deeds recorded, but Triplett was not at home and so I could not get the new deed from his and wife... A man named Clarke, black-smith lives on the land, but the Yankees have left him no force with which to cultivate the land..." Numerous folds, margins rough, a few minor holes at fold intersections, else very good.
