1598. FRANK DAMROSCH (1859-1937) German conductor, teacher and composer, the brother of Walter Damrosch, he directed the Institute of Musical Art in New York. Nice musical content A.L.S. "Frank Damrosch", 2pp. 8vo., New York, Nov. 26, 1898, to a lady, in part: "...In reply to your inquiry I beg to say that [a symbol] stands for corrado time, where each of the four parts is equal to a quarter note. [Another symbol] marks the...time as alla breve in which each beat is equal to a half note. If there are four half notes in each measure it is called the larger alla breve; if only two half notes, the small alla breve. The latter is more frequently used in modern music..."
