DACHAU PRISONER'S PRESS RELEASE (POST LIBERATION)
Fine content typed press release written by the International Prisoner's Committee of the Dachau concentration camp after it was liberated by the Allies, 2pp. 4to., Dachau, July 19, 1945, addressed to all national groups present at the camp informing them of the departure of their commanding officer. In part: '...We will never forget the man who took care of us and gave us back freedom and life...Our beloved camp commanding officer Col. Roy is leaving tomorrow...It was Col. Roy's aim from the beginning to make our life more livable and to settle all pending affairs concerning the repatriation and welfare of the Dachau people...He has always and fully appreciated our demands, when they were justified...he seemed to be like a good father to us all...he has a deep feeling and sympathy for the misery and sorrows of our fellow men...The camp of Dachau, where we suffered more than a human mind can imagine is now filled up again by those who tried to rule Europe by terror and tyranny. But we know that these scenes of unimaginable horror and cruelty...will nevermore occur, as the representatives of the American Nation are men who can be severe, but who are not tyrants...' Slightly toned, chipping around the edges, some type is faint but still discernable. Dachau was surrendered to the Allies on April 28th, but prisoners were still housed there for months afterwards until moved to ‘displaced persons' camps or released.
