RICHARD GALE (1896 – 1982) British military officer who served with 1st Parachute Brigade and then the 6th Airborne Division during the D-Day landings and Operation Tonga to seize important bridges over the Caen Canal and Orne River . In 1958, Gale 1958, succeeded Montgomery as Deputy Supreme Allied Commander Europe. Fine association signed book, "By Air to Battle", prepared by the Ministry of Information for the Air Ministry, (London: His Majesty's Stationery Office), 1945. First edition, 144pp. 8vo. in gilt-stamped leather, spine and cover edges worn a bit, contents fine. "The Official Account of the British First and Sixth Airborne Divisions". Gale has inscribed the book: "To Major General Harold R. Bull In memory of our first meeting & our discussion of airborne organization! Richard N. Gale Lieut. General 27 May 1949". General HAROLD R. BULL (1893-1976) served as Eisenhower's Assistant Chief of Staff SHAEF Headquarters from 1943 to 1945. His office prepared most of the periodic situation reports to the Combined Chiefs of Staff and the SHAEF Operational Directives which were issued by Eisenhower's headquarters. Bull's office included the SHAEF meteorological staff which helped Eisenhower decide to launch the invasion of Normandy on the morning of June 6, 1944.
