Description:

D-DAY BRITISH LANDING SECTOR MAPS
Good lot of three war-date, pre-D-Day maps, each depicting areas taken by British landing forces during the invasion of Normandy. Includes: 1:25,000-scale map, 24 1/4" x 19 1/2", showing the Normandy town of Creully and environs, including the Juno landing beach in the vicinity of Courseulles-sur-Mer. This is a very late map, possibly the last one prior to D-Day: it is headed "SECOND EDITION (APR. 1944)". No credit is given the map''s creators, but it is numbered "G.S., G.S. 4347". Shows original folds with isolated spots of slight soiling, else very good. WITH: 1:50,000-scale map, 29 3/4" x 21 3/4", an earlier map again depicting Creully and environs, published by the British War Office in 1943. Shows folds with soiling at the top and bottom edges, else very good. WITH: 1:50,000-scale map, 30 1/2" x 21", depicting the vicinity of Caen, published by the British War Office in 1943. Caen was intended to have been captured during D-Day, but British and Canadian forces were stalled north of the city until July. The Allied bombardment destroyed 70% of the city and killed over 2,000 French civilians. Shows folds with some soiling, else very good. Three pieces.
