D-DAY BELGIAN RESISTANCE NEWSPAPER
Rare D-Day issue of "Front - Organe National de Front de Independence", Brussels, June 5, 1944, 8pp. 4to., published the day before the Allied landing on the Normandy peninsula to the west. The paper, printed in French, bears a first page filled with exhortations: "..the population has a heart to listen to the words of the Allied High Command and their order given in the London radio. A narrow liaison is established, at H hour, between London and the resistants, notably the F.I…agents, profit from the disarray caused by bombardments to sabotage services and accentuate confusion in the country…sabotage the machine of war and transport of the enemy…FORMATION OF PATRIOTIC MILITIAS…prepare to entrap the enemy…offer your services to immediately arrest traitors…FIGHT, AGITATE, RESIST UNTIL THE END OF THE ENEMY…". Much more. Some toning. The Independent Front or FI was a Belgian resistance movement founded in March 1941 by Dr. Albert Marteaux of the Communist Party of Belgium, Father André Roland, and Fernand Demany, another communist. It established sabotage operations, escape routes and a false document service, and distributed 250 different underground publications.
