Description:

Czech book highlighting a lesser-known massacre of World War II: 'Velkomeziricska Tragedie' ('The Velke Mezirici Tragedy of 1945'), 52pp. oblong 4to., published in 1945 by the small Czech town of Velke Mezirici. After members of a small communist group gathered in the town hall in May 7, 1945, the Wehrmacht declared martial law, interrogated over 100 individuals, executed at least 50, and hung the group's leader from a street lamp stand in the town square . Largely untranslated, though the book seems to detail the massacre, bearing portrait images of many of the interrogated and deceased individuals, as well as numerous other pertinent photographs. Slight chip to the back cover, else fine. Presumed rare, as we could not find other examples. We also found remarkably little information about this event through our research, so it is a worthy project for a dedicated researcher. The victims of this massacre were broadcast through a Czech broadside, which is also being sold in the next lot of this sale.
