CUSTER  (1839 - 1876) Union major general of cavalry who fought in nearly every battle of the Army of the Potomac, including Gettysburg, and later met his tragic end at the hands of Cheyenne and Sioux warriors at the battle of Little Big Horn. Fine war-date A.E.S. removed from a document, 1p. 3 1/4" x 4 3/4", "Headquarters 1st Brig. 1st Div. C.C. A[rmy of the] Potomac], [n.p.], Apr. 24, 1864, in full: "Believing it to be for the interests of the service and particularly for the interests of his regiment I most respectfully recommend that the officer's resignation be immediately accepted. G. A. Custer Brig. Genl. Comdg. Brig.". Bottom of "C" in signature slightly smudged, else very good.
