Description:

CUBAN REVOLUTION BROADSIDE
Broadside, 9" x 12", advertising a lecture given by FREDERICK FUNSTON (1865-1917), an American who went to Cuba to fight in their war for independence from Spain. The broadside reads: "Cuba Libre! Don't Fail to Hear COL. FUNSTON, Hero of 24 Great Battles In the War for Cuban Independence. He is the only American who can give authentic account of the conflict. See the man and hear him discuss the situation on the War-Wasted Island. Hamilton Hall, Topeka, Kas. Thursday, Mar. 3, '98" This dates the broadside to that tenuous period between the sinking of the battleship Maine in February and the outbreak of the Spanish-American War in April, and likely contributed to the popular sentiment against Spain. Funston, who was a civilian when he first travelled to Cuba, was appointed a Colonel of the 20th Kansas Infantry and sent to fight in the Philippines, where he participated in the capture of Filipino President Emilio Aguinaldo. He was promoted to Brigadier general, but attracted controversy by publically praising the tactics employed by General Jacob Smith, who issued order that all captured Filipinos over the age of ten should be summarily executed. Funston argued that the same measures should be employed against American opponents of the war. Minor chips at margins, set in a wood frame.
