Description:

CRUISER "KARLSRUHE" CADET''S LOGBOOK
Excellent pre-World War II logbook, approx. 224pp. 9" x 11", completed by Reichsmarine cadet Alfred Fassbender and used to record the 1933-34 world cruise of the light cruiser KARLSRUHE. Besides Fassbender''s daily entries recording the progress of the cruise, the log is liberally illustrated with his original illustrations and maps, as well as numerous tipped in photographs and articles of ephemera collected by the cadet from various ports of call. The log opens with an original postcard photo of the Karlsruhe, accompanied by a hand-illustrated depiction of her bow shield bearing the motto "Fidelitas". Fassbender''s additional illustrations, most in colored pencil, include maps of Great Britain, Spain, Sicily, Gibraltar, India, Australia, Samoa, Seattle, New York, and many others, as well as a diagram of a pump, profile depictions of the Karlsruhe and the American battleship USS NEW MEXICO, and the flags of numerous nations. Many of these illustrations are executed on the verso of tipped-in informational sheets distributed to the crew, listing facts and statistics regarding each port of call. Many of these also feature rubbings of local coins. Affixed within are numerous photo postcards and snapshots, several depicting the Karlsruhe itself, with others depicting warships of other nations, including the American aircraft carrier USS SARATOGA and the British battleship HMS NELSON, both in the Miraflores Locks of the Panama Canal, and the light cruiser USS CONCORD and the submarines USS NAUTILUS, USS DOLPHIN, and USS S-20, all at San Diego. The bulk of the photographs consist of postcards depicting typical scenic attractions at various ports of call. Numerous hotel luggage labels and souvenir maps are also included. The log is bound in leather covers, showing expected wear and soiling, and the binding is split in multiple spots, with several signatures loose, but all present. The bulk of Fassbender''s entries are untranslated by us, and would be a worth subject of further research. During the invasion of Denmark and Norway, the British submarine HMS Truant was positioned outside the fjord at Kristianstad and when her crew spotted the ship, she fired a spread of torpedoes. Karlsruhe suffered heavy damage and was sunk.
