CREWS OF THE ATOMIC MISSIONS OVER JAPAN An excessively rare sent of twenty-five signatures of the crew members of the Enola Gay, Bockscar, and The Great Artiste, the "silver plate" B-29s of the 509th Composite Group, that flew the Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic bomb missions that ended World War II. The signatures, obviously gathered by a determined collector over a period of time, appear on two 4to. pages, undated and with no location indicated, and are accompanied by a set of 5" x 7" photos of the planes reproduced from the original slides taken on Tinian Island near or just after war's end by the engineering officer of the 509th, Carl Garner. Almost all the signers have included their rank, date of flight, and aircraft assignments, and include PAUL TIBBETS, JACOB BESER (the only man who flew on both strike planes), CHARLES SWEENEY, FRED BOCK, FRED OLIVI, TOM FEREBEE, and others who are now deceased or otherwise unobtainable. The Enola Gay dropped the first atomic on Hiroshima on August 6, 1945 with The Great Artiste serving at the blast measurement instrumentation aircraft, with Bockscar dropping the second bomb on Nagasaki three days later, with Great Artiste, originally intended as the strike plane, again acting as an instrument carrier.
