Description:

CRAWLER, RAISED THE ALARM AT LITTLE BIGHORN PHOTOGRAPH
Superb and scarce Scott cabinet card photo of Crawler. Slohan, or Crawler, a Siha Sapa (Blackfeet) was one of the most influential leaders in the Lakota Nation during the Indian Wars and then the reservation transitional period. Crawler was an ally of Sitting Bull's and provided significant support to Sitting Bull from the Frank Kelly incident through to the Little Bighorn. Deeds, Crawler's son, was the first Lakota killed at the Little Bighorn, and it was Crawler who raised the alarm of the imminent attack. His daughter, Moving Robe Woman, a.k.a. Mary Crawler, fought against Reno and Custer, her exploits being among the most notable recorded from the Little Bighorn. A mint albumen with only light wear to the cabinet card and most of the gilt blocking still intact. Published under Scott's Fort Yates, Dakota stamp. Excellent.
