COVERALLS AND SWEATER OF ADM. HENRY H. MAUZ, CMDR. ATLANTIC FLEET
HENRY H. MAUZ, JR. (b. 1936) U.S. Navy admiral and the former Commander in Chief, United States Atlantic Fleet from 1992 to 1994. He served in Vietnam, operating river patrol boats along the Mekong Delta. He went on to command a minesweeper, USS Prime (MSO-466), the guided missile destroyer USS Semmes (DDG-18), and the guided missile cruiser USS England (CG-22) (1980–1982). Mauz served as commander of the United States Seventh Fleet from 1988 to 1990, and in August 1990 assumed command of all United States Naval forces in the Persian Gulf. This included overall command of all amphibious U.S. Marine forces. A pair of uniform items once owned and worn by Adm. Mauz, to include: a pair of green standard issue Navy deck coveralls, zippered closure as well as zippered pockets on the legs and chest. The left breast bears a black leather patch with gold lettering: 'H. H. MAUZ JR. VICE ADM USN' Below this patch is a large embroidered patch from the carrier USS CARL VINSON, with the right breast bearing an embroidered U.S. 7th Fleet patch. The right shoulder bears a third patch, an angry rooster with a smoking gun barrel and reading 'ATTACKRON 66' for Attack Squadron VA-66, Corsairs that flew from the VINSON. Also present is a British-made heavy blue wool sweater with cloth shoulder patches, also bearing a leather name tag and with slip-on shoulder boards ornately embroidered with gold and silver wire anchors and four stars each. The coveralls show wear consistent with use, the sweater is as new.
