Description:

A superb content, war date, manuscript D.S., 1p. 4to., 'Headquarters Army of Northern VA', July 28, 1862, general order announcing the court martial of Gen. Richard B. Garnett (1817-1863), Confederate brigadier general who served under Stonewall Jackson and James Longstreet, and later killed in action during Pickett's Charge at the Battle of Gettysburg. In part: '...A general court martial more able and to sit without regard to days or hours will assemble on the 6th day of August 1862 within the limits of Major Gen. T. J. Jacksons command for the trial of Brig. Gen. R. B. Garnett and such other provisions as may be properly brought before it...' It goes on to list members sitting on the court including Maj. Gen. Richard S. Ewell, Brig Gen. Jubal A. Early, Brig. Gen. Isaac R. Trimble, and Brig. Gen. James J. Archer. Signed at the conclusion, under orders from Robert E. Lee, by ROBERT H. CHILTON (1815-1879), Confederate brigadier general who served as Chief of Staff for the Army of Northern Virginia for most of the war. Expertly inlaid to a larger sheet, slight toning, else very fine condition. Richard Garnett was serving under Stonewall Jackson during his Valley Campaign of 1862. At the First Battle of Kernstown on March 23, 1862, under the influence of faulty intelligence, Jackson ordered Garnett and the Stonewall Brigade to engage a Union force believed to be comparable to their own in size, when it was actually much larger. The engagement went poorly, with Garnett being surrounded on three sides and ordering a retreat. This infuriated Jackson, well known as a strict disciplinarian, who had never given Garnett permission to retreat. He had Garnett arrested for neglect of duty and relieved him of command. The trial commenced in August of 1862 but was postponed and never resumed due to the start of Robert E. Lee's Northern Virginia Campaign, and Stonewall Jackson's death after the Battle of Chancellorsville. Despite their professional disagreement, Garnett set aside ill will and volunteered as a pallbearer at Jackson's funeral in Richmond. He would later be assigned to George Pickett's command and would be killed in action during his charge at the Battle of Gettysburg. An excellent historic document.
