CONTINENTAL DESERTERS IN THE MARCH TO YORKTOWN Fine content A.L.S. of aide de camp D. Lyman, 1p. 4to., Peekskill, Sept. 10, 1781 to quartermaster Nicholas Quakenbush at Albany. He writes in full: "The General [Heath] has received information from his Excellency General Washington, that a number of Soldiers have deserted from the regiments under his Command as it is probably some under this description may attempt to cross the ferry at Albany — You will please to order the strictest examination to be made and send all such as one of suspicious Characters to the Head Quarters of Genl. Heath". It is likely that these were deserters from the artillery corps then getting ready to embark for Yorktown from Head of Elk. On September 6, 1781 Washington wrote to Robert Morris that "Capt. Machin of the Artillery is detached to pursue some deserters from that Corps; he will have occasion for some money for expenses. If you can advance him about £10. it will be sufficient...".
