'CORPS D'AFRIQUE' MUSTER-IN ROLL
Very rare muster-in document from the 1st Louisiana Native Guard 'Corps d'Afrique', 1p. 16.5 x 11 in., New Orleans, Oct. 3, 1863. Daniel P. Rolf is mustered in to serve as captain of Co. K. Rolf completed the document and signed it three times. Stains from a tape repair on the verso, some fold splits, else very good. The 'Corps d'Afrique', or 1st Louisiana Native Guard (USA) was one of the first all-black regiments to fight in the Union Army during the Civil War. The Guard originated in New Orleans, in 1862, during its occupation by Union forces. On September 27, 1862, Major Gen. Benjamin F. Butler organized the Guard regiment of 1,000 men that included some men who had earlier served in the Louisiana Confederate Militia under the same name.
