Description:

A possibly rare find, a near full-sized facsimile of the 'Japanese Instrument of Surrender', 9pp. 17 x 22 in., complete with facsimile signatures, kanji lettering, related documents including one from Hirohito authorizing the Japanese representatives to sign the document. The document ends with three full-page photographs, two showing the signing of the Japanese instrument of surrender and one showing the signing of the German instrument of surrender months earlier. Very light uneven toning on the first page from previous framing, else very good condition. Gen. MacArthur originally had eleven full-sized facsimiles made of the Instrument of Surrender, but later increased this for distribution among the Allied Nations present during the signing. The size of this example is just two inches shorter than an example presented to Joseph E. Davies, Special Advisor to President Harry Truman, which sold for $47,500 at Bonham's in 2015. However, the two black bars near the first letter of this example are more spotted rather than solidly printed, and some characters within this example have been incompletely printed. Due to these inconsistencies, the piece is sold as is out of an abundance of caution. Warrants further research.
