Description:

COPPER ENGRAVING PLATES - EARLY AVIATION
Lot of two copper photogravure engraving plates, one 3 1/2" x 7 1/4" x 1", and the other 3 1/4" x 5" x 1". The larger plate depicts a group of aviators and U.S. Army personnel gathered in front of a biplane, while the other depicts a young girl in an Army uniform handing a handkerchief to a pilot seated in the cockpit of a Curtiss biplane. These plates were made by chemically etching a photographic negative onto a sheet of copper, which would reproduce the minute details and tones of the original. The image could then be reproduced many times, making it an ideal illustration method for newspapers and books. Both blocks are stamped: "May 29 1919". The plates come from a collection of items belonging to the Aero Club of America, the first organization in the United States to license pilots, which still exists as the National Aeronautic Association. Both plates bear minor scratches on the face, and both wood blocks are ink-stained from use, else very good.
