SAMUEL COOPER (1798 - 1876) Confederate major general who was the highest ranking officer in the Confederate army. He served as Inspector General in Richmond throughout the war and fled with Jefferson Davis when the capitol fell. Nice association L.S. "S. Cooper " 1p. 8vo., Washington, April 22, 1853, to Jerome Bonaparte, brother of Napoleon, who at the time was residing in Baltimore. In part: "...In reply to your appreciation of the 16th Ultimo for the transfer of your son, Bvt. 2nd Lieut. J.N. Bonaparte, from the Regiment of Mounted Riflemen to the Ordnance Department, I am instructed by the Secretary of War to express his regret that the interests of the service will not justify a compliance with your wishes... ". Bonaparte settled in Baltimore after his marriage to Elizabeth Patterson in 1803, and his son, was born two years later, given the name Jerome Napoleon Bonaparte. Floated on red and purple mat, and set into a gilt frame. Near fine condition, unexamined out of frame. yes"> $300-400
