(CONTINENTAL NAVY BRIG LEXINGTON) HENRY JOHNSON
HENRY JOHNSON Revolutionary War Continental Navy ship's master, commander of the American privateer Lexington when it was captured by the HMS Alert on September 19, 1777 while his vessel was bound for its home port of Boston. During the battle, the Lexington ran out of powder and was forced to surrender. Fine content war-date D.S., 1p. 8vo., [Aboard the Lexington off Morlaix, Brittany], Aug. 15, 1777 - one month before the Lexington would be captured. He writes, in part: '...the Bearer hereof Mr. Augustine Guichard is Midshipman aboard the Lexington Arm'd Brig in the Service of the United States of America under my Command - his business...is to apprehend a deserter named Methusaleh Lewis, Carpenter's Mate on board said Lexington...given his passport under my hand...' Folds and moderate soiling.
