CONTINENTAL ARMY LOYALTY OATH A rare partly-printed D.S. "Dan Tucker" (signed twice), 1p. 8vo., Fort Schulyer, October 10, 1780, a combination loyalty oath and oath of office for Daniel Tucker for his new position as Assistant Deputy Quartermaster at Fort Schulyer, New York. The document signed only two weeks after the discovery of Arnold's treason, Tucker swears that "...the UNITED STATES of AMERICA, to be Free, Independent, and Sovereign States, and declare that the People thereof owe no Allegiance or Obedience to George the Third, King of Great-Britain and I renounce, refuse, and abjure any Allegiance or Obedience to him; and I do Swear that I will to the utmost of my Power, support, maintain, and defend the said United States, against the said King George the Third, his heirs and Successors, and his and their Abettors, Assistants, and Adherents, and will service the said United States in the Office of Asst. D Q M at Fort Schuyler which I now hold, with fidelity, according to the best of my Skill and Understanding... " Interestingly, and likely in a bow to the interests of Quakers who refused to swear oaths, the document leaves the place for "swear " blank leaving open the option to either "swear" or "affirm" their allegiance. The document continues with a second affirmation, this time affirming that Tucker would fulfill his duties in his new office. Also signed twice "P. Cortlandt Colo." A very rare and unusual document that we have not encountered previously. A few toned spots, usual folds, otherwise very good condition. $600-800
