688. CONTINENTAL ARMY DESERTERS. DAVID HOBART Colonel in General John Stark's Brigade. L.S. 1p. 8vo., [n.p., November 1778] to the "General Assembly or Committee of Safety of the State of New Hampshire" concerning a deserter from the army, "one John Tyler of New Holderness who belongs to the Continental Army as a soldier of this State in Capt. Stones Company & Colo Scammels Regiment (who left the Army soon after they reached Albany or below after the Victory Obtained over Burgoyne's Army) and Returned to said New Holderness where he was taken up last June and was about to be sent to the Authority of this state under Guard, but by the Intersession of some Particular Gentleman on his behalf that he would return to the Army & so to his Duty as a Good Soldier if he could have the liberty and not be send as a Deserter. He was therefore permitted to Return to his duty and went off with David Nevins who as after a Soldier in the same company... but Nevins reached as far as Springfield & there Died which way said Tyler way is unknown but he lately Returned again to New Holderness, without as is supposed of his having any liberty from any Officer in ths Service... I have therefore taken him up as a Deserter & now send him to the care of the Authority of the State..."
