Description:

CONFEDERATE SOLDIER TREASURES THE BALL THAT WOUNDED HIM
Incredible Civil War relic, a 5/8" lead ball that nearly took the life CSA soldier William H. Jones of the 23rd North Carolina. The ball, flattened on one side from its impact with Jones' body, is enclosed in a four-band gold cage with a circular link at top for attaching to a chain or watch fob. Each of the four arms are engraved in very delicate script reading: "W. H. JONES - WOUNDED - ANTIETAM - SEPT. 17TH 1862". The gold is clean and bright and all the engraving is strong and completely legible. Union records do not show anyone with that name fitting the facts indicated in the engraving. Confederate records show William H. Jones of the 23rd North Carolina was wounded at Antietam. He had enlisted at the age of 16 on June 3, 1861, mustering into on July 13 as a member of the 13th North Carolina (eventually to be renumbered the 23rd N.C.). July and August, 1861 saw Jones sick in camp, but in September he returned to duty. He was wounded at Gaines Mill on June 27, 1862 but returned in time to fight with his regiment at South Mountain and Antietam. At Antietam, Jones' regiment was just to the left of the "Bloody Lane", and Jones was hit in the left side during the battle. He was sent to Chimborazo Hospital No. 2 in Richmond and while he was recovering it was discovered he was underage. As a result he would be discharged on Dec. 19, 1862. With a copy of Jones' records.
