697. CONFEDERATE SOLDIER'S LETTER - POPE BARROW Confederate soldier, member of the Troup Georgia Light Artillery Battery. For much of the war they were attached to the Army of Northern Virginia. A.L.S., 1p. 4to., Athens, Ga., Apr. 12, 1861 to Governor Joseph E. Brown of Georgia. The day Confederate guns opened fire on Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor, Barrow writes to the Governor informing him of the progress of the artillery company at Athens. He writes in part: "The Troup of Artillery have decided not to make the contemplated exchange of their cannon for rifles. I found them on my arrival this morning with well filled ranks and they are now actively engaged in drilling in the Artillery drill. The company was very much disappointed and regretted exceedingly that the Washington Artillery were sent in their stead to Pensacola..." Usual folds else fine. $200-300
