398. CONFEDERATE SOLDIER'S LETTER PRE-CHATTANOOGA War-date Confederate officer's letter, 1p. 8vo., in pencil by Lt. Simon C. Wilkerson, Co. E, 18th Alabama Infantry, Marietta, Ga., Sept. 14, 1863 to his wife. In part: "I will start to my command this evening. I don't know...where I will be able to find it. The cars ran together last night above here and killed some 50 men and wounded...over one hundred more...I will have to march about thirty miles before I can get to my regt...". Wilkerson served faithfully with his regiment until he was captured during the battle of Missionary Ridge on Nov. 25, 1863 and sent to Johnson's Island prison camp. He remained there until the close of the war and returned home after signing the oath of allegiance on June 13, 1865. Light spotting, else very good. $150-200
