Description:

CONFEDERATE SOLDIER'S LETTER
Good content war-date A.L.S. of Pvt. Robert M. Rucker of the 2nd Tennessee, 3pp. 8vo., Bryantsville, Ky., Oct. 12, 1862 to his mother and father, in part: "...I have been in six battles of this war, in some, as hot places as possible to be, and through the intervention of a kind providence I have come out safe, without a scratch even on my clothes, in every one of them. We had a severe battle with Buell's forces last Wednesday the 8th of this month at Perryville near Harrodsburg. We are amassing our troops, here in Kentucky, & will have another Great battle soon, I expect. I wrote a few lines home a little better than a week ago, only giving you a sketch of our...March into Kentucky, our success at the battles of Richmond Ky., and our march from there to Covington, on the Ohio, &c I have not time to give you any particulars the man I send this by is going to start in a few minutes, But we are again in our old command after having been detached viz. two Brigades out of Hardee's division, Cleborne, and Preston Smith - Kirby Smith in my judgment is superior to any Major General in Chief I have fought under yet - He is a General every inch of him - In the last battle we were in hot and heavy for two hours - we lost but five with Richmond and Shiloh mostly wounded and five killed but it was owing a good deal to the skillful management of our Brigadier [Gen. Patrick] Cleborne who I look upon as the best in the service...". Light toning, especially along folds, else very good.
